Squad Leader

To own the client relationship and have full accountability for four key areas: Squad leader, Strategic direction, Commercial success, Account growth.

Key Responsibilities

Squad leader:

  • Manage a team of 6-8 people, blended from different departments.
  • Lead the team through the period of transformation in a new structure
  • Live and instil the new culture in that team, and bring them together to break down existing siloes.
  • Be responsible and accountable for the performance of that team, the quality of its output which includes creative excellence, delivering quality efficiently and collaboration with one another, other teams and across offices.
  • Work to your squad target, outperforming to the stretch target.


Strategic direction:

  • Become a peer-level, trusted advisor to our clients, understand their business challenges and provide strategic advice and direction to address through corporate communications solutions.
  • Ensure relevant proposition or digital experts are involved to ensure we are providing innovative, market-leading solutions reflective of our full range of capabilities.
  • Produce inspiring, insightful and compelling briefs that guide both our teams and the client throughout the project.
  • Take the lead in delivering insights, research, focus groups and workshops or work collaboratively with a consultant if deeper specialist expertise is required.
  • Keep abreast of communications, industry appropriate and legislative trends and developments to provide relevant, timely advice.

Commercial success:

  • Full commercial responsibility and financial accountability across your accounts, including all of those within your squad.
  • Oversee project scoping and planning, briefing, resourcing, forecasting, delivery and invoicing ensuring work is produced on time, to brief, on budget, to required profit margins and that the client is happy.
  • Ensure that your clients are on track to meet their annual revenue and margin targets and proactively address if there are any shortfalls
  • Maintain accurate and timely management data on all your accounts, and report regularly on progress.

Account growth:

  • Identify, plan and develop revenue growth opportunities on existing accounts, engaging appropriate experts to assist in revenue conversion.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with key contacts across the client’s network and any other partner agencies or advisors.
  • Lead and coordinate new business pitches by working effectively with the consultants, creative and client service teams.
  • Responsible for production of pitch documentation, overall strategy and response to client challenge as well as the internal brief to the team.
  • Work with account management teams to produce cost proposals and schedules for new opportunities.
  • Where relevant, build and maintain a network of referrers by networking, attending relevant industry events and developing trusted partnerships.
  • Maintain the highest levels of client service across the account to provide an effective, consistent first class client experience and result in a happy client!

Skills, knowledge & experience:

  • Proven ability to generate revenue from developing accounts and new business.

  • Collaborative, team-worker able to build strong relationships and adapt style to be equally effective, persuasive and influential across range of partnerships and projects.
  • Mature leader, personable and enthusiastic team player with energy, stamina, drive and intelligence, with strong corporate communications experience, agency or client side.
  • Ability to truly listen to clients, challenge where appropriate and manage their expectations – a diplomat with strong EQ/client empathy skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present with confidence.
  • Structured and a clear thinker able to review and articulate strategic or creative work against client success criteria.
  • Experience of complex, multi work-stream projects, working with cross-discipline teams.
  • Multi-tasker with ability to prioritise tasks - ability to manage clients and projects under pressure and manage up as well as down when appropriate.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to see the bigger picture and act/prioritise accordingly: able to simplify complex tasks into actionable activities for a team.
  • Resilient, passionate, energetic and hungry. A positive driving force within the business - with strong business acumen and commercial awareness.
  • Strong sense of responsibility, commitment and accountability.
  • Ideally, will have managed teams previously

KPI’s:

Strategic direction:

  • Quality, insightful written brief is completed and approved for every project which includes cross-discipline thinking and input.
  • Maintain highest levels of service throughout your account and delivery teams. Ensure the client is happy with scores of 4 or 5 on client satisfaction survey.
  • Contribute to Emperor’s thought leadership program by producing at least 1 article per year.
  • Happy and efficiently functioning cross discipline teams. This will be measured through 6 monthly 360 feedback, as well as through the client satisfaction survey.

Commercial success:

  • Create accurate proposals using fee calculator and SOW documents.
  • Meet or exceed revenue budgets set for your accounts.
  • Achieve 10% margin across all your accounts but aim to achieve 20% margin.
  • Ensure accounts teams manage and invoice scope creep, change requests and add-ons by leading or supporting in client interaction.
  • Attend monthly review with CFO to review financial status on all accounts.
  • Attend monthly client development review and planning session with CSD.
  • Attend and input into weekly growth meeting to review all upcoming and pipeline opportunities.
  • Feed into yearly forecasting process as well and any interim re-forecasts as required.

Account growth:

  • Ensure development plans are in place for each focus account or client.
  •  Produce monthly report for CEO to document pro-active client development activity in line with your plans.
  • Lead and coordinate new business pitches, meeting required pitch numbers with a target success rate of at least 1:3.
  • Attend at least 2 live client or referrer meetings per month that result in increased scope in additional projects or additional work.

Culture:

  • Manage a successful team, ensuring all team members are performing, working together as a team, and delivery quality efficiently.
  • Demonstrate and be recognised for living the Emperor Principles via 360 feedback, pitch feedback and client satisfaction surveys.
