Williams Racing, now competing as Atlassian Williams Racing, is one of the world’s leading Formula 1 teams. With new ownership and a mission to return to winning multiple world championships, they came to Emperor for support across a number of workstreams.

Challenge

Williams knew that to return to the top, they needed to attract and retain top talent, review and transform their ways of working, and embed a high-performance culture. To make this a reality, they needed to mobilise their people and take them on this journey.

Response

We worked with Williams across three core initiatives. Firstly, we began helping them to embed a high-performance culture through launching a set of redefined values and behaviors. This involved creating a 12-month campaign to launch and embed them across the business. At the same time, we began supporting them through their journey of transformation. We created a compelling change story with a call-to-action that everyone could understand and work towards. We also coached their leaders and ambassadors to become change agents and provided them with toolkits to become more effective communicators.  Finally we helped them to attract and retain top talent by articulating why somebody should choose to invest their career with Williams. As a leading F1 team, they had no shortage of people wanting to work for them. But they needed to attract people who would thrive within a fast-moving F1 environment. We heard that being part of a mission to take Williams back to the top was a compelling talent drawcard. The final People Promise focused on the unique contribution made by every person at Williams to ‘Create our winning formula’.

Results

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be Williams’ partner throughout this work. And we are thrilled to see how these projects are contributing to their ambition of returning to the top of the podium again.
